We have big hopes for this machine. It succeeds the original UBP-X800, a deck we awarded five stars back in 2017. The new model has been buffed and tweaked under the hood rather than being completely overhauled, but if we’ve learned anything about Sony’s Blu-ray players over the years, it’s that they’re usually highly competitive, if not class-leading, especially at around this £350 ($500) price point.
The UBP-X800M2 sits a couple of rungs up from what we’d call budget, though, and its main rival is the Award-winning Panasonic DP-UB820EB. It’s a little slimmer than the Panasonic, but still weighty thanks to Sony’s frame and beam chassis design which aims to increase rigidity and minimise the effects of external vibrations.
It’s a minimalist-looking deck too, designed to hook up with and complement Sony’s Award-winning STR-DN1080 AV receiver. The fascia is clean, apart from power and eject buttons on the right. The loading draw is tucked away behind a large section of the front panel which drops down. It’s slightly strange that there’s no display on the player, though.

Sony UBP-X800M2 design – Industrial looks and exceptional build quality

How much you like the look of the Sony UBP-X800M2 depends on whether your taste in design leans towards the industrial. Its angular, rough-textured metallic body with a glassy black strip running along the front edge is almost brutal in its approach.
Personally, I like it. Especially since the build quality is exceptional, with lots of thick metal countering initial concerns that the deck’s slender profile might be a barrier to a quality-orientated layout of the internal components.
In fact, it turns out that the X800M2 boasts the same ultra-rigid “frame and beam” chassis design you get with Sony’s flagship X1100ES. This is intended to eliminate the tiny chassis vibrations and electrical interference that can impact sound quality.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 even sticks with the X1100ES’s metal heatsink and disk drive. They’re included to keep the player cool and precise, even if you decide to have the movie/music marathon to end all movie/music marathons.
Given the uncompromising quality of the X800M2’s bodywork, the remote control is a disappointment. It’s a plasticky affair that feels like it’s been borrowed from a much cheaper player.

We’ve come to expect great sound from Sony’s 4K Blu-ray players, and the UBP-X800M2 doesn’t let us down. It’s wonderfully musical by the standards of this price. It displays an even more fleet-footed and rhythmical approach to the score of Fantastic Beasts than the Panasonic DP-UB820.
There’s dynamics and detail in spades during the amusing bank scene near the beginning of the film. Strings sound sweet and natural, with plenty of sparkle through the percussion. Dialogue is clear, natural and convincing – the player delivers Newt’s softly spoken manner with great subtlety which other rivals find hard to do.
As the Obscurus starts to tear through the city, the Sony’s impressive dynamic ability comes to the fore, the score and the scene explode into life with soaring highs and crashing lows delivered with immense verve and vigour. For this money, this deck is a real entertainer.

Потоковые сервисы 4К с Dolby Vision
Естественный вопрос, возникающий после покупки ТВ с Dolby Vision – откуда черпать контент? Т.е. что может служить источником фильмов 4К Dolby Vision?
1. Конечно, самый простой способ – это воспользоваться потоковыми сервисами. На сегодняшний день стриминг видео 4К Dolby Vision осуществляют Amazon Prime Videо, Netflix и Vudu. Недавно был запущен новый сервис Apple TV +. Как утверждается, кое-что из транслируемого им контента 4К также будет с метаданными Dolby Vision.
Здесь ещё стоит упомянуть магазин iTunes Store, где можно купить или взять напрокат фильмы 4К Dolby Vision. Стоимость покупки порядка 350 рублей. Сам же фильм можно передать с любого Apple устройства на телевизор, воспользовавшись опцией AirPlay 2. Кроме того, было обещано, что к концу 2019 года премиальные модели Сони ТВ — 2019 будут оснащены поддержкой iTunes.
2. Другой вариант – UltraHD Blu-ray диски. У этого варианта есть свои плюсы, и свои минусы. Плюс в том, что фильмы на этих дисках имеют «максимальную комплектацию». Здесь и видео в двух вариантах – SDR и HDR. Т.е. с обычным динамическим диапазоном и расширенным.
Здесь и дорожка с метаданными Dolby Vision, и самое главное – все доступные варианты звукового сопровождения, включая DTS-HD Mster Audio и TrueHD Atmos. Минус – надо покупать специальный проигрыватель BD, поддерживающий не только 4К, но и Dolby Vision. А это удовольствие не из дешёвых.
Какие Blu-ray плееры поддерживают Dolby Vision
Например, проигрыватель Sony UBP-X700 стоит около 20000, а более современная модель Sony UBP-X800M2 – уже под 30 т.р. Бюджетный вариант плеера с поддержкой Dolby Vision – Panasonic DP-UB450 стоимостью порядка 200 евро. Кроме того, есть ещё целый ряд плееров с поддержкой DoVi: Cambridge CXUHD, LG UBK80 и UBK90, LG UP970, Oppo 203, Oppo 205, Panasonic DP-UB9000, Pioneer UDP-LX500, Pioneer UDP-LX800, Sony UBP-X1100ES.
Для соединения BD-плеера с телевизором потребуется кабель HDMI спецификации Premium Hi-Speed (скорость передачи данных 18 Гбит/сек).
3. Третий вариант – смотреть 4К фильмы с Dolby Vision через USB с внешнего носителя. Как и в случае с потоковыми сервисами в данном случае контент с DV будет воспроизводиться внутренним плеером телевизора Сони. И здесь есть один неприятный момент. Практически все блюрей диски 4К UltraHD двуслойные в том смысле, что содержат как слой со стандартным диапазоном SDR, так и слой HDR.
Медиаплеер же телевизора на текущий момент может выводить на экран Dolby Vision только если эти метаданные упакованы в контейнере с одной видеодорожкой HDR. Поэтому напрямую смотреть образ BD 4K, записанный на флешку или диск, не получится. Контент будет отображаться как обычный HDR10.
Значит, надо перепаковать (сделать ремукс) образ или папку BD с фильмом так, чтобы в контейнере осталась одна видеодорожка HDR и метаданные DV. Одна беда – это будет контейнер MP4, который не поддерживает многоканальный звук без потерь. А контейнер MKV с его практически безграничными аудиовозможностями не поддерживает Dolby Vision.
Как сделать ремукс 4K UltraHD BluRay диска с Dolby Vision
Для этого лучше воспользоваться программой CloneBD. На первое время её возможностей вполне хватит. Для ремуксинга нужен диск UHD Blu-ray в виде файла ISO или папки BDMV. Ну или сам диск при наличии привода.

Wie Panasonic hat auch Sony Maßnahmen ergriffen, die Bildqualität von 4K-HDR-Filmen bei der Wiedergabe auf Fernsehern ohne HDR-Technik zu verbessern. Dazu rechnet die HDR-SDR-Konvertierung auf intelligente Weise den breiten HDR-Helligkeitsbereich in ein SDR-Bild um.
Für die Entwicklung der HLG-Technik (Hybrid Log Gamma) zeichnen die BBC und die japanische TV-Gesellschaft NHK verantwortlich. Dabei erfolgt die Ausgabe in einem einzigen Videosignal, das automatisch von SDR-Fernsehern als SDR-Signal und von entsprechend ausgestatteten HDR-Geräten als HLG-HDR-Signal interpretiert wird.
Aber auch für den umgekehrten Weg ist der UBP-X800M2 ausgestattet: So bietet er ein 4K-Upscaling, was herkömmlich produzierte SDR-Filme in die verbesserte Bildqualität ähnlich der 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray mit 4K-Details hochrechnet.

Mit 350 Euro liegt der Preis für den Sony Alles-Player recht niedrig. Erkennbar ist der Rotstift zum Beispiel daran, dass es für die Audio-Ausgabe keine Analogausgänge gibt. Das gilt sowohl für Multikanal als auch für Stereo, so sucht man einen Kopfhörerausgang vergebens.
Das Einsparpotenzial besteht darin, den kompletten Digital-/Analogwandlerbereich wegzulassen und das Tonsignal ausschließlich auf digitaler Ebene auszugeben. Das kann immerhin per koaxialem S/PDIF-Interface erfolgen, sodass der Betrieb auch mit einem Stereo-Verstärker möglich ist, sofern jener digitale Eingänge enthält.

Given that it’s the Sony UBP-X800M2’s main raison d’etre, it’s a shame to find the deck’s Dolby Vision playback affected by not one but two significant flaws.
First, there’s no automatic detection of whether or not a disc you insert supports Dolby Vision. You therefore have to manually select Dolby Vision “on” or “off” – an irritation made worse by the fact that it isn’t always easy to know if a particular disc has Dolby Vision or not.
By comparison, all other brands of Dolby Vision-supporting 4K Blu-ray player can automatically detect whether they should be outputting Dolby Vision or HDR10.
Making this weird situation worse is the way the X800M2, like the Sony X1100ES and X700 4K Blu-ray players before it, outputs everything – SDR, HDR10, HLG, whatever – behind a Dolby Vision flag if you leave the deck’s Dolby Vision mode switched on.
This means your TV sees the incoming content as Dolby Vision and tweaks its playback accordingly, resulting in such problems as over-wrought skin tones, raised black levels, and a tendency for the very wide aspect ratio pictures to “glow” slightly.
The Sony UBP-X800M2’s other Dolby Vision issue is a performance rather than implementation one. Namely that as with the Panasonic UB820 and Sony X1100ES, it plays Dolby Vision titles too brightly.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 4K Blu-ray player’s general build quality is pretty good.
This can actually look quite effective at times, elevating the extra dynamism usually associated with Dolby Vision. Unfortunately, the raised brightness means that the lightest parts of Dolby Vision images can appear devoid of detail and subtle toning information.
Shots of the sun can turn into shots of a white hole in the sky, for instance, or bright reflections on a rippling sea can turn into a weird white patch torn out of the sea’s surface.
I’ve raised this issue with Dolby, but are yet to hear that a solution is on its way.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 is otherwise an excellent performer. Its HDR10 4K Blu-ray pictures look beautifully refined, full of fine detail and free of seemingly any sort of electrical or processing noise.
Colours, too, look exquisitely rich but also gorgeously nuanced, contributing to a picture that does pretty much everything it can to sell 4K Blu-ray’s HDR, colour gamut and resolution benefits over the humble old HD Blu-ray.
Even the Dolby Vision pictures look beautiful when there isn’t an obvious area of bright “clipping” drawing your eye away from the rest of the action.
Motion is perfectly delivered, regardless of whether you’re watching a 24p movie on a disc or 50/60Hz streams from the built-in apps. In this latter respect the X800M2 easily outperforms Panasonic’s UB820, which suffers unwatchable amounts of judder when using its streaming apps.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 also proves to be an excellent upscaler of sub-4K content, particularly from HD Blu-ray discs. Upscaled images look sharper and more detailed without looking noisy or plagued by “ringed” or forced object edges.
The Panasonic UB820 upscales slightly better, but it’s a slight difference. I’d say the Sony X800M2 performs marginally better – at least where sharpness is concerned – than the UB820 with HDR10 sources.
A bigger difference can be seen between the HDR-to-SDR conversion systems of the Panasonic UB820 and Sony X800M2. And this one doesn’t go in Sony’s favour. For while Panasonic’s conversion process works remarkably well, Sony’s approach crushes detail out of dark areas, and makes some colours – especially darker hues – look unnatural.
Sonically, the Sony UBP-X800M2 is excellent. It handles its highest-quality sources – Hi-Res audio files and, especially, DVD-Audio and SACD discs – with so much aplomb and precision that it deserves to be partnered with as high-end an audio system as you can manage.
It doesn’t turn its nose up at more typical music sources, though; quite the opposite. Its DSEE HX feature does a remarkable job of making compressed, digital audio sound richer, fuller and more dynamic. In fact, the more compressed the source, the more impressive DSEE HX’s impact.

Around the rear of the deck is a familiar arrangement of video and audio outputs. Again, they’re kept to a minimum. There are twin HDMI outputs that can be used to split audio and video so you’re feeding the purest signals into your display device and AV home cinema amplifier. There’s also a coaxial digital output and an ethernet for wired internet connection and for accessing the player’s built-in streaming services (dual-band wi-fi is also included).
Look closely and you’ll see a small Bluetooth logo. That’s right, you can actually stream audio from the player to a pair of headphones. It’s useful for late-night viewing and we don’t suffer any lip-sync issues when using the feature during testing.
As part of its smart suite, the UBP-X800M2 comes with the three major video streaming services: YouTube, Netflix (with a dedicated button on the remote) and Amazon Prime Video. There is 4K HDR support where available, although the Sony doesn’t support Dolby Atmos over Netflix or Dolby Vision via Amazon Prime Video.

The Sony also doesn’t cater for HDR10+, which is a little disappointing when rival machines such as the Panasonic DP-UB820EB tick all the major HDR boxes. It’s a shame given the admirable way Sony continues to stand by and support niche audio formats such as DVD-Audio and SACD, which are both supported by the UBP-X800M2.
We’re also confused and a little frustrated by the way Sony has seen fit to implement the player’s Dolby Vision support. Like the more expensive Sony UBP-X1100ES, instead of automatically switching between HDR10 and Dolby Vision depending on the content you’re playing (as with the Panasonic), you have to enable and disable Dolby Vision through the player’s menus.
It’s particularly long-winded and slightly unintuitive, especially since having it enabled automatically triggers your TV’s Dolby Vision picture mode when you’re watching a disc that’s only in HDR10.
As with the X1100ES, the X800M2 also includes HDR to SDR conversion, although we doubt you’d be buying this player to use with a non-HDR-supporting 4K TV. It comes in more useful when the player is used with a projector, many of which don’t support HDR standards.
In operation, the Sony is as quick and slick as anything we’ve tested in 2019. Discs load quickly and the player responds to button presses on its small, palm-sized remote without any hesitation.

Только вот передавать изображение она будет в разрешении FullHD. В таком случае вам будет гораздо проще и дешевле купить обыкновенный Blu-ray вместо аналогичного устройства 4К. Но здесь уже все зависит от ваших планов на будущее. Ведь, как бы там ни было, приобретение плеера UltraHD — перспективное решение.

We fire up the Sony and slip in the 4K Blu-ray of Spider-Man: Homecoming, where we’re greeted by a crisp picture with plenty of detail and insight. When things take a turn for the worst aboard the Staten Island ferry, the Sony shows great composure as the fast-paced action unfurls.
As Vulture hovers over the ferry, attempting to take down Spidey with his high-tech weaponry, the Sony keeps motion stable and composed. As Vulture’s weapon malfunctions, the bursts of bright light are punchy and vibrant. The Panasonic DP-UB820EB appears to deliver them with slightly greater intensity, but there’s not a huge amount in it.
It’s a similar case with colours, as the Sony opts for a more reserved, neutral approach, while the Panasonic goes for greater vibrancy and a slightly more film-like quality which emphasises depth and which some might find slightly more immersive.
With standard 1080p Blu-rays, the Sony’s balance and composure shine through once again. Of course, the picture quality does rest on the quality of the disc put its way. It can’t do much to alleviate the noise from the Transformers film, but it does a fine job with Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, with great attention paid to the texture and detail of Newt Scamander’s smart attire.

The Sony also doesn’t cater for HDR10+, which is a little disappointing when rival machines such as the Panasonic DP-UB820EB tick all the major HDR boxes. It’s a shame given the admirable way Sony continues to stand by and support niche audio formats such as DVD-Audio and SACD, which are both supported by the UBP-X800M2.
We’re also confused and a little frustrated by the way Sony has seen fit to implement the player’s Dolby Vision support. Like the more expensive Sony UBP-X1100ES, instead of automatically switching between HDR10 and Dolby Vision depending on the content you’re playing (as with the Panasonic), you have to enable and disable Dolby Vision through the player’s menus.
It’s particularly long-winded and slightly unintuitive, especially since having it enabled automatically triggers your TV’s Dolby Vision picture mode when you’re watching a disc that’s only in HDR10.
As with the X1100ES, the X800M2 also includes HDR to SDR conversion, although we doubt you’d be buying this player to use with a non-HDR-supporting 4K TV. It comes in more useful when the player is used with a projector, many of which don’t support HDR standards.
In operation, the Sony is as quick and slick as anything we’ve tested in 2019. Discs load quickly and the player responds to button presses on its small, palm-sized remote without any hesitation.
Geringe Laufgeräusche
Da die UHD-BluRay-Disc mit Drehzahlen bis zu 5.000/Min. arbeitet, sind die Anforderungen an das optische Laufwerk sowie an das Gehäuse und die Laufwerksaufhängung hoch. Bei so hohen Drehzahlen entstehen Vibrationen, die sich als Dröhnen bemerkbar machen können, und um diese zu unterdrücken, ist eine große Masse des Gehäusechassis von enormer Bedeutung. Dem hat Sony beim UBP-X800M2 Rechnung getragen, sodass die Laufgeräusche auch bei der Wiedergabe von UHD-BDs kaum hörbar sind und bei Musik ab Zimmerlautstärke ohnehin nicht. In diesem Punkt schneidet der Sony also besser ab als sein Konkurrent von Panasonic.

Leichte Unterschiede bestehen bei den Wiedergabeformaten, so spielt der Sony PCM-Audio bis 192 kHz/24 Bit ab, der Panasonic schafft bis zu 384 kHz /32 Bit. Für die Praxis spielt das allerdings kaum eine Rolle.
Als Online-Services gibt es Prime, YouTube und Netflix, Letzteres auch in Dolby Vision. Dafür wäre eine Einschaltautomatik im Alltagsbetrieb hilfreich. Auf die Steuerung per Alexa und Co. muss man beim Sony derzeit noch verzichten, das Gleiche gilt auch für eine Bedienung per App.
HDMI für Video und Audio
Die Haupt-Anschlussart besteht freilich über die beiden HDMI-Schnittstellen, eine separate Buchse für Audio ist also vorhanden. Somit lassen sich auch AV-Receiver mit der älteren HDMI-1.4-Schnittstelle nutzen, die darüber das Audiosignal erhalten. Der HDR-fähige Fernseher bekommt das Videosignal über die HDMI-2.0-Schnittstelle, genutzt werden können die getrennt herausgeführten Anschlüsse auch für das Vermeiden von HDMI-Jitter.
Und noch eine interessante Variante hat der UBP-X800M2 zu bieten, denn er kann parallel zur HDMI-Ausgabe Audiosignale per Bluetooth an einen kabellosen Lautsprecher schicken – das Ganze in der von Sony entwickelten, klanglich hochwertigen LDAC-Codierung. Insbesondere bei Nutzung der Digitalausgänge hängt die erzielte Tonqualität also nicht vom Player, sondern vom D/A-Wandler des AV-Receivers ab.
Für die schnelle Medienwiedergabe besitzt der Sony UBP-X800M2 eine USB-Buchse auf der Frontplatte. Ohne angeschlossenen Speicher ist die Buchse verdeckt. Sony
Bezüglich der Bildqualität glänzt der UBP-X800M2 mit sehr guter Schärfe, das gilt besonders für die Skalierung von HD auf 4K. Dennoch ist dieses durch einfache Pixel-Verdopplung erzielte Ergebnis nicht mit der verfeinerten Farbausgabe des Panasonic-Players DP-UB824 vergleichbar, der dafür eine aufwendige Interpolationstechnik einsetzt. Diesbezüglich stellt Panasonic also – nicht nur – in dieser Preisklasse die Referenz.
