The high praise doesn’t stop with the player’s sound quality. The Pioneer UDP-LX500 delivers a fantastic picture too. It’s close to that of the Panasonic DP-UB9000, but just about edges it in terms of outright detail and clarity.
As Poppy’s missiles strike their targets in Kingsman, the Pioneer delivers the explosions with vim and vigour. Bursts of yellow don’t so much pierce the night sky as smash right through it. They don’t overwhelm the overall image, though, and there’s still plenty of detail in the darker areas of the scene.
As Eggsy and Merlin chat amongst the ruins of Kingsman HQ, the droplets of water on Merlin’s coat are superbly defined, the punchy bright lights of nearby buildings catching the texture of his coat and the beads of water with precision.
The UDP-LX500 picks out plenty of detail from all the rubble and splintered wood.
Skin textures and facial stubble are treated in the same confident and colourful way. We say colourful, but there’s subtlety and neutrality too. The Panasonic DP-UB9000, on the other hand, prefers a slightly richer colour balance.
Switch to the 4K Blu-ray of Despicable Me, and the Pioneer’s balanced colour palette is easy to see. When Gru is doing surveillance on Vector’s hideout, the brilliant white of Vector’s lair has serious punch, while the green, yellow and red hues on Gru’s jumper all pop out of the screen without appearing overdone. You’re able to enjoy the picture’s vibrancy without your eyes feeling strained.
The UDP-LX500 is also a confident upscaler. Played through a Samsung QE65Q9FN TV, the Blu-ray of Transformers: Dark Of The Moon isn’t completely devoid of noise, but it has a firmer grasp on the picture than the TV’s built-in upscaler and there are fewer artefacts present too. Of course, the source material will always have a big say in how good the picture looks, but this machine still proves its worth.

Pioneer UDP-LX500 – Audio
In addition to support for almost all audio formats (on disk and via file ) this player is also an excellent audio player. The analogue cinch output delivers pleasant and pure sound that undoubtedly can please audiophiles. To disable all possible faults you can use the ‘Direct’ button (remote or at the front of the player). This switches off the digital video and audio output.
The Zero Signal Terminal is a simple cinch connection that connects you to an unused cinch input on your AV receiver. This allows the player to align the reference level (the ground (GND)) of both devices. This avoids any potential differences and guarantees the player the best possible transmission. We tried this with our Onkyo AVR and a music file that contains silence. However, when we connected the ZST there was a very soft hum in the speakers, a deterioration rather than an improvement. For that we had to set the amplifier very loud, so in practice the impact seems very limited. Anyone who doubts leaves the ZST connection away, the player also delivers fantastic sound.
Performance
Of course, at this level, performance is everything, and the UDP-LX500 doesn’t disappoint: The player shares video componentry with its reference grade stablemate, the UDP-LX800, which sells for twice as much, and picture quality is very fine indeed. The player conveys astonishing levels of fine detail and nuance. 4K Blu-rays are marvellously cinematic (the opening space battle in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is nothing short of breathtaking), while HD Blu-rays gain additional solidity.
HDR presentation is also excellent. Out of the box, the deck handles standard HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and there’s the promise of a firmware update to include HDR10+, in due course. The deck’s video output can even be matched to different display technologies, be it LCD, OLED or projectors. A useful trick.
Pacific Rim Uprising (4K Dolby Vision) really provides an opportunity for the deck to strut its HDR stuff. Gloriously dynamic, with a rich, vibrant colour palette, the player offers wide colour candy and dynamics in abundance.
So is the UDP-LX800 comparable or even better than the Panasonic DP-UB9000? The answer to this isn’t immediately clear cut. Side by side, both decks appear absolutely peerless.
It’s only when you investigate (literally) under a magnifying glass that you’ll see that the Panasonic’s image processing technology, with proprietary 4:4:4 colour sub-sampling, has the edge. This removes any semblance of stepping from curves and edges, and providing smoother colour detailing. From a normal viewing distance though, there’s little to separate the two models.
Pioneer UDP-LX500 – features
Did you, when reading the specifications, wonder why there is no WiFi on this unit? The explanation is simple, because the device does not have any streaming application on board. So no, no Netflix, YouTube or other and no music streaming services.
The only network functionality is updating the firmware and the DLNA media player. Obviously, that player also has to put up with the lousy text interface and was certainly not fun to use. The device usually reacts slowly, which makes browsing through the DLNA structure very uncomfortable.
The media player via usb also provides varying work for video: it did not play files containing DTS soundtracks, and Dolby Vision files did not play in HDR . These are two strange mistakes for a device that clearly supports both standards (via disk). He does play all subtitles. His strong side is audio, where he supports almost all formats, including hi-res FLAC, ALAC and DSD.
The real asset of this Pioneer UDP-LX500 is that it is an all-player for disks. In addition to Ultra HD Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, DVD and CD, including all (re) writable variants, it also plays SACD and even DVD Audio discs. An excellent excuse to top up our DVD Audio version of Queen, A Night at the Opera.
Of course he can perfectly bitstream or decode all audio formats for disks (to PCM), from Dolby Digital and DTS to the lossless versions Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio. If you have an older receiver you can convert all Dolby formats to standard Dolby Digital by selecting the ‘reencode’ setting and for DTS versions you get the DTS core version. Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are supported when you put the player in Bitstream (and your audio equipment can display them of course).

Despite its obvious sophistication, this is pretty much a plug and play deck. That said, Pioneer won’t win any plaudits for User Interface design. The brand has operated a policy of dour functionality for more years than I care to remember, and there’s no change to that philosophy here.
Consequently, the Home menu is a bare bones affair, made more barren by the lack of any integrated streaming services, be they audio or visual. The Panasonic DP-UB9000 has Pioneer well beat here.
But there is still fresh excitement to be had. The deck boasts a superb disc display function, which is able to read HDR10 metadata from compatible UHD discs. This reveals Max FALL (Maximum Frame Average Light Level) and MaxCLL(Maximum Content Light Level) information, and offers a real insight into the mastering and display potential of 4K discs. Do you really need a display capable of 1200 nits to make the most of your HDR discs? As it happens, in most cases not.
The actual disc loader is slick, smooth and whisper quiet; there’s no cheap clatter here. The deck typically takes just over 40 seconds to go from tray in to menu onscreen, for movie discs, which is an average performance.

Features
The menu system is simpler than Panasonic’s somewhat overcomplicated one, with two menus you should investigate – Audio Parameters and Video Parameters.
The latter allows you to assign preferred video settings to one of three presets. Within each you can change brightness, contrast, hue, chroma level, sharpness and noise reduction. These are useful if you want to give the content you’re watching a particular flavour. That said, we’d suggest setting it to Reference so the video signal output by the player remains untouched.
It is definitely worth setting the Pioneer up for the display you’re using. You are given the option of LCD TV, OLED TV or projector. It’s straightforward and ensures the player is outputting a picture that’s somewhat tailored to the screen to which it’s connected.
Bringing up the player’s Audio Parameters allows you to access the digital filters for the player’s internal DAC. You can choose between Sharp (which promotes a solid sound), Slow (a softer sound) and Short (a smoother sound). We settle on Sharp for our testing, but the differences are subtle so we’d recommend experimenting.
The LX500 is a universal disc player, so besides Full HD, 3D and 4K Blu-rays, it can also handle DVD-Audio and SACD discs which will please some prospective buyers. To see basic information on the disc you’re watching, press the display button. A long press shows more advanced information such as the colour bit depth of the disc being played, the peak brightness and HDR format being displayed.
The UDP-LX500 supports the usual HDR formats, such as HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and at the time of writing, an HDR10+ software update is promised for sometime during the Spring.

As is the trend with expensive 4K Blu-ray players, there are twin HDMI outputs, allowing you to split the audio and video signals if you’ve got a suitable home cinema set-up. There’s no multi-channel analogue out, but Pioneer believes that most people buying the UDP-LX500 will already own an AV receiver with HDMI inputs compatible with the latest audio and video formats. And we’re inclined to agree.
There’s no wi-fi, but there is an ethernet connection. That’s really only for software updates, though, as the Pioneer doesn’t have any built-in smarts such as Netflix or YouTube. With the vast majority of modern displays now featuring these apps, we don’t see that as any kind of shortfall.
Owners of compatible Pioneer AV receivers will be able to take advantage of the UDP-LX500’s Precision Quartz Lock System (PQLS) feature, which allows your Pioneer AV receiver to act as the digital master clock in your system. That should mean reduced jitter (digital timing errors) between player and amp and result in improved audio.
The Pioneer does have one new trick up its sleeve. On the rear panel, there’s a socket labelled Zero Signal, which is designed to ground audio and video signals and help maintain signal quality as it passes through the player into your AV receiver.
Simply connect one end of a standard analogue interconnect to the Zero Signal socket on the player and attach the other to an analogue audio or video socket on the rear of your home cinema amp. We feel it adds a bit more solidity and focus to the sound, and so it’s worth trying out if you’ve got a spare interconnect lying around.
Design
At 10.3kg (a whopping 22 pounds), it’s a serious lift, but you’ll take comfort from its armour plated chassis and engineered stability.
Connectivity includes two HDMIs (one for combined sound and vision, the other offering separated audio if required), USB ports front and back, digital audio optical and coaxial outputs, and a meaningful pair of stereo phonos.
There’s also an Ethernet connection for networking, plus RS-232C for high-end home control integration.
If you’re wondering about that ‘universal’ handle, it means in addition to playing 4k Blu-ray discs, and their regular 2k cousins (including 3D editions), as well as DVDs and CDs, the UDP-LX500 will also party with SACD and DVD-A music collections, and decode Hi-Res audio files. It’s a media maestro in every sense.
Pioneer UDP-LX500 – Conclusion
You get this Pioneer in the first place because you are looking for an audiophile all-player. As a bonus, it is also an excellent Ultra HD Blu-ray player with support for Dolby Vision. But he has made a number of important compromises. Although it is an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the Spartan user interface is more reminiscent of audio player. All internet streaming applications are omitted and the video media player may be slightly more complete. On audio level, there is no analog multichannel output and those wishing for balanced XLR outputs should choose the higher model (the UDP-LX800).
The high-end character is reflected in an extremely robust and silent disc player all your disks play (and yes we also mean SACD and DVD Audio). The picture and sound quality are excellent. We can be clear about the price, which is very high. You also need to be sure that you absolutely want this feature set. The Panasonic DP-UB9004 is a better alternative if you find SACD and DVD audio less important, and in exchange want a number of useful picture functions, analog multichannel outputs and XLR stereo.
Final verdict
While its £999 ($999, AU$1999) price tag might be a bit intimidating, Pioneer has produced a peach of a player with the UDP-LX500. This heavyweight home cinema hero deserves to be shortlisted by all high-end upgraders, and can comfortably claim to be the best universal 4K Blu-ray player available for less than a grand.
There are caveats though. It’s not quite as brilliant a video performer as its main rival, the cheaper Panasonic DMP-UB9000, and it’s not quite as well finished either. However, if music is as important as movies to you, it’s clearly got broader appeal. Move over Bradley and Gaga, a new AV star is born.

Sound
Pioneer designed this player to be just as accomplished with audio as it is with video, and it shows. We start with the 4K Blu-ray of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and as Poppy’s missile strike takes out the Kingsman headquarters the explosions sound dynamic and suitably bombastic. There’s weight and power here, but the Pioneer also keeps a tight grip, drawing crisply defined lines around rumblings as they ripple out and around your head.
In the aftermath of the strike, Eggsy confronts Merlin and the Pioneer does a great job of extracting the emotion, distress and the slight hint of comedy in Eggsy’s voice.
Switch to CD playback and the Pioneer sounds equally natural and effortless in its delivery. It has a fine grasp of timing and delivers a solid and robust drum beat to accompany Eminem’s White America. Hit the Direct button, which turns off all digital video and audio processing, and it adds a little extra clarity to the sound. Music sounds purer, with detail and dynamics easier to extract.
Play George Michael’s Faith and there’s a nice even balance to the sound. There’s a tight twang to the guitar strums and percussion has just enough of a cutting edge to entertain without sounding too harsh.
Compared to its closest rival, the Panasonic DP-UB9000, the Pioneer organises the different elements that little bit better and delivers audio with greater focus and precision. The UB9000 opts for a fuller, richer sound that is appealing in its own right. It’s an easier listen, even if it isn’t quite as convincing.
Pioneer UDP-LX500 – ease of use
He looks fantastic on the outside, then frankly we also had a modern and handsome interface expected. Unfortunately, you have to put it with a particularly banal text interface that is probably many years old. After startup you will only see a menu that gives you the possibility to select the source or to adjust settings.
The menus with settings are clear, but there is no word explanation. So keep the manual during the installation. You get a lot of choice about how to send the HDMI signal outside. The two HDMI connections can be activated in three modes: Single (image and sound via the HDMI main output), Separate (image via HDMI main, sound via HDMI Sub) and finally Pure Audio where you only get sound via the HDMI sub output (you can then activate the image by pressing Display).
Remote control
The remote control initially seems quite overwhelming and if you are a fan of simplicity it is certainly not a high flyer. But you quickly learn that the seeming overabundance of keys makes it possible to activate the main functions of the player with a single key.
There are separate keys to adjust the HDMI resolution, choose the HDMI mode (Single, Separate or Pure Audio), adjust picture and sound parameters, and select audio track and subtitles. The remote is illuminated, so it can also be used perfectly in the dark.
Sound performance
Where the UDP-LX500 clearly scores over rivals is in its sonic performance. Most obviously, that comprehensive audio disc support, good news if you have a stockpile of DVD-Audio releases or are still snapping up SACDs.
Both of these venerable formats sound gorgeous, combining delicious clarity with toe-tapping musicality. The deck also does a fine job with regular CDs. Perfer downloads? No problem. The player is also High-Res audio file compatible.
The internal design goes some way to explaining this talent, with an optimised audiophile-style layout for the power supply, digital processing and analogue audio components: Serving the deck’s analogue output is an AKM AK4490EQ DAC. It’s perhaps not as accomplished as the ESS Sabre Reference ES9018 used in the older BDP-LX88, but it’s not sonically shabby either.
You can further fine tune the performance using a trio of digital filtering modes: Sharp Roll-Off, Short Delay, Slow Roll-Off. These offer subtle tonal differences, and while I could come to no clear preference, it’s fun to experiment.
