Sony XF85 (Sony KD-55XF8505) – Settings

The XF85’s pictures sadly suffer with problems you can’t solve with any of the provided setting options. The only thing that makes any significant difference is the Active Contrast feature. Without this on, the TV’s black levels with High Dynamic Range sources are unbearably bad.

You can try switching between the TV’s Standard and Cinema presets to tackle its contrast shortcomings too, if you like. But for me this just makes the picture look either a bit too blue or a bit too red respectively.

Make sure you remember to activate the Game preset when playing video games. This reduces the screen’s response time from nearly 100ms to around 30ms. Easily enough to be the difference between life and death in Call Of Duty.

Finally, I’d recommend using Sony’s MotionFlow processing on Standard or True Cinema to reduce judder without the picture starting to look unnatural.

Other panels to ponder

We haven’t yet seen many other lower mid-range TVs that we might compare against the 55XF8505. You can still buy some interesting sets from last year at discount prices, though.

The Sony KD-55XE9005, for instance, uses a VA panel and direct LED lighting to deliver a far superior picture, and can currently be bought for £999. Football fans should note, though, that at the time of writing it has not been confirmed that the 55XE9005 will be able to play the BBC’s 4K HDR World Cup streams.

Also extremely tempting if you’re after a TV for a predominantly bright room is the Samsung Q7F QLED TV. This uses an outstanding screen filter and ultra bright, ultra colourful ‘QLED’ Quantum Dot picture technology to deliver some of the punchiest HDR pictures seen to date. The only catch is that its use of edge LED lighting means it only delivers so-so black levels when you’re watching films in a dark room.

Finally, you can get Sony’s far, far superior KD-55XF9005 for £400 more. And it’s worth every cent of that.

Sony KD-55XF8505 – ease of use

Sony equips his televisions with Android TV, already version 7 (Nougat). There is no significant difference with the previous version, except support for HLG within Android TV, and the possibility to log in with multiple Google accounts.

Unlike at Philips where you have a Google username and password during the installation must type, it appeared on this device still possible to set your television easily and quickly with the help of your smartphone. This saves you a few minutes during installation, but provides no further benefits. Those who want to add a second account simply need to enter a username and password.

Remote control

The remote of the XF8505 series is identical to that of the XE90 series last year, only the ‘Discover’ button under the -pad has been replaced by a ‘tv’ button, more about that. A classic zapper in other words, with rubber top and keys with a very low profile. He feels pleasant and the keys take just enough pressure. Through a little tangible relief around the d-pad you control it without looking and you do not accidentally hit one of the six keys around it.

The layout is fine, although we find the playback keys slightly too small at the bottom. The apps key to the right of the d-pad actually has no added value. The remote has separate buttons for Netflix and Google Play and a microphone button at the top.

Итоги обзора Sony XF80

В заключение обзора XF80 от Sony сделаем выводы. Серия Sony XF80 на первый взгляд очень соблазнительная для таких ОТХ и ценовой категории — ведь это телевизоры 8 серии Сони. За 70000 рублей вы получаете телевизор с Android на борту, но с 43″ диагональю…

Несмотря на улучшенный «алгоритм системы динамической подсветки» Sony Live Colour и стандартный дисплей Triluminos, мы видим неоднородность подсветки. Далее, 400 герцовая обработка Motionflow XR 400, но работающая с частотой 50 Гц. Естественно, мы понимаем, что эта частота умножается, но иногда можно наблюдать фризы. Поддержка HDR10 и HLG есть у всех производителей в этом году. Система Android с браузером Opera — проверенная и привычная для большинства пользователей.

Безусловно, серия Sony XF80 это хорошие 4K UHD HDR телевизоры, но подсветка и IPS матрица никак не тянут на «продвинутую» модель. Временная задержка — отдельный камень в огород, в крутые игры не поиграешь. Уровень черного цвета — не хватает его глубины. Часто темные части изображения кажутся пятнистыми, можно комфортно просматривать в темном помещении.

Хотелось было данный подраздел начать следующим образом, что флагманом FHD телевизоров модельного ряда Сони 2018 года является серия WF80… Но лучшие времена FHD телевизоров далеко позади и ни для кого не секрет, что современные UHD 4К HDR телевизоры нещадно вытесняют с рынка FHD-сегмент, который и сами производители обделяют вниманием, с каждым годом всё больше и больше урезая по техническим показателям fhd телевизоры. Поэтому, начнём более скромно, согласно духу времени

Модель Сони 2018 года WF80 (несмотря на выше сказанное) является одной из лучших в своём классе телевизоров. На этот раз производитель не поскупился и наделил WF80 поддержкой расширенного динамического диапазона HDR10, HLG, поддержкой HEVC, операционной системой Андроид, встроенной памятью 16 Гб, Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, поддержка Bluetooth. Как видим, очень неплохо, для FHD LED телевизора с ЖК экраном в 2018 году.

Модель представлена в 43 и 49 дюймах. Матрица типа IPS, 60 Гц, EDGE LED.

Сони KDL-WF66.

Следующая FHD модель Сони 2018 года серия WF66, представлена в размерах 43 на IPS 60 Гц матрице и 50 дюймов на VA 60 Гц матрице. Основные отличия от старшей восьмой WF-серии заключается в отсутствие OS Андроид, тип подсветки DIRECT, отсутствием Bluetooth и урезанном WI-FI 802.11b/g/n.

Сони 43RF45.

Ну и наконец самая бюджетная, базовая модель Сони 2018 года ЖК телевизор Сони 43RF45.

Представлена в одном размере 43 дюйма. Имеет IPS матрицу в 60 Гц, DIRECT подсветку.

Без доступа к интернету, соответственно без Смарт TV, отсутствие Bluetooth, но с двумя портами HDMI и двумя USB. Также в наличии разъёмы для наушников/компьютерной акустики. Имеется антибликовый фильтр и неплохой запас по яркости.

Как видим производители Сони телевизоров в 2018 году предоставляют потенциальным покупателям неограниченный выбор на любой цвет и вкус, с массой технических возможностей и с очень достойным качеством изображения практически под любой контент.

Сони BRAVIA AF8.

Модель ОЛЕД (organic light-emitting diode) телевизора BRAVIA Сони AF8 выпущенного в 2018 году является продолжением линейки моделей ОЛЕД 2017 года, а именно серии А1. Основное отличие нового класса моделей ОЛЕД от предыдущего заключается лишь в наличии внешнего дизайна. В частности, на AF8 убран наклон экрана, который на ОЛЕД телевизоре серии А1 достигался благодаря интегрированной подставке, теперь же телевизор AF8 располагается на более традиционной алюминиевой ножке, что позволяет размещать телевизор в любом удобном для вас месте. В новой модели ОЛЕД телевизора Сони BRAVIА AF8 изменено расположение сабвуфера, в новинках он разделен на две части и располагается прямо на задней панели телевизора. В А1 он находится в подставке. Сама же аудиотехнология осталась прежней и носит фирменное название Acoustic Surface. Это уникальная, новаторская разработка, благодаря которой, звук непосредственно передаётся всей поверхностью экрана. Аудиосистема выдаёт очень высокое качество звука и позволяет его грамотно распределить относительно источника.

К тому же, технология Acoustic Surface создаёт широкое звуковое поле заполняя всё пространство, тем самым снижает необходимость в приобретении дополнительных динамиков.

В остальном модель BRAVIA OLED телевизора 2018 года Sony AF8 наделена теми же техническими характеристиками, что и OLED модель предыдущего года Sony А1. Используется та же панель, за исключением одной особенности, которая заключается в изменении субпиксельной структуры, красный пиксель сделали чуть более крупным, для улучшения защиты от выгорания светодиодов. Smart TV platform

The KD-55XF8505 uses the same chipset as last year’s models. The Mediatek MT5891, with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 and Mali-T860 GPU has 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It gives the smart TV platform a more pleasant and smoother experience. In top models we prefer to see something more powerful, but for these types of subtoppers the performance is certainly sufficient.

Smart functions

The interface of Android TV fills the entire screen, with top recommendations. Then you get a row of apps, games and the inputs. At the very bottom you will find all settings. Compared to LG WebOS and Samsung Smart Hub, the interface looks unnecessarily large.

Android TV’s main asset is the built-in Chromecast function. This allows you to browse Netflix on Youtube on your smartphone, for example, and to show the selected content on your television with the press of a button. Your smartphone remains usable for other things. A list of apps that support Google Cast can be found in the Google Home app on your smartphone. The YouTube app unfortunately does not show any HDR images, but it did work in Netflix and Amazon.

The most important change in the interface, and the remote, is the ‘TV’ button. That key, at the bottom of the d-pad, switches directly to the built-in TV tuners. If you are already looking at built-in tuners, this key activates what used to be the ‘Discover’ menu. This is a small bar at the bottom of the screen that first shows TV functions (the TV guide, recordings, etc.), but also includes recommendations, and where you can create a list of favorite Android apps. You can not call that menu anymore if you do not watch TV (via the built-in tuners), we regret that.

The media player is very complete and played all our video test files, including HDR video. The music player knows no advice with ALAC, but with all standard music formats. And he also reads all the tags. Get VLC from the Google Play Store, who know what to do with ALAC. Kodi or any other media player is also recommended if you want to give the TV the look and feel of a media library.

Sony XF85 (Sony KD-55XF8505) – Performance

While the XF85 shows signs of Sony’s picture know-how, you often have to look hard to spot them. Sadly it’s far easier to see what Sony’s TV makes a mess of, namely black levels and contrast. After testing a run of contrast-rich OLED and high-end LCD TVs, the XF85’s black level failings hit me like a hammer.

A pall of low-contrast greyness hangs so heavily over dark scenes that it’s pretty much all you see. Especially if you’re watching an HDR source. In fact, even during mixed brightness shots, the greyness over the dark bits still dominates.

There’s really no settings-based solution to the 55XF8505’s black level woes. The IPS panel’s core contrast performance is just too poor to work round in any effective way.

The grey wash over anything dark also impacts deep colours, which end up looking washed out and unconvincing. Shadow detailing all too often gets lost in the XF85’s ‘mist’.

If you force yourself to see past the Sony XF85’s dark scene woes, you might see that motion looks clean and crisp. This helps native 4K pictures remain unusually detailed and sharp for the XF85’s price. There’s also some impressively polished colour management. During bright scenes, the subtle toning is combined with bold saturations.

The picture sometimes looks brighter than you’d expect from a measured brightness output of 510 nits. With the Standard picture preset, bright and mid-bright HDR pictures look can look genuinely punchy. The typical brightness level is quite high, and HDR light peaks are passably bold. That said, the inadequate black levels still leave the XF85’s HDR dynamics feeling depressingly ‘compressed’ versus the best HDR TVs.

The TV is great for its money at upscaling HD content, even without the superior X1 Extreme chip’s dual database upscaling engine. HD pictures look significantly sharper and more detailed once they’ve been through the upscaling engine. Even better, the upscaling does a great job of removing any noise a sub-4K source might contain.

The relatively restrained brightness of standard dynamic range images don’t expose the XF85’s black level limitations as brutally as HDR. Watching the TV in a bright room can also mitigate the set’s contrast woes to some extent.

In the end, though, nothing the XF85 can do stops its back level failure from being the dominant feature of your viewing experience.

While the XF85 is a substandard picture performer, its sound is actually pretty good. Its bodywork is sturdy enough to support plenty of volume before any harshness or distortion sets in. The speakers disperse the sound far and wide across your room without the sound becoming messy or artificial. Details are plentiful and clear, and vocals sound authentic, open and well contextualised.

As with almost all built-in TV sound systems, a bit more bass depth would have been nice to hear. Though to be fair, the XF85’s mid-range is open enough to ensure things seldom sound harsh or thin.

Smart TV (Android TV)

The 55XF8505 is pretty challenged in the smarts department thanks to Sony’s ongoing love-in with Google’s Android TV platform: As well as persisting with the same clunky-looking, poorly organised full screen home menu we’ve had to put up with for generations now, Android TV seems to put so much strain on the 55XF8505’s available processing power that everything — including the TV’s set up menus — sometimes runs painfully slowly.

You also can’t customise the home screen as effectively as you can most other modern smart TV interfaces, and software updates to the system are frequent and, often, quite large.

There are a few positive things about the 55XF8505’s smart TV features. For starters, they support a huge number of apps and Sony has managed to get round Android TV’s problems with catering for the UK’s local catch-up TV apps by including YouView. This brings together the key BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4 and My5 terrestrial broadcaster catch-up services, and lets you find shows you may have missed via a backward-scrolling electronic programme guide.

Finally, the Android TV platform now supports direct Chromecasting to the TV, as well as Google Assistant and Alexa voice recognition functionality.

Smart TV TL;DR: Android TV is as unhelpfully laid out, buggy and sluggish as ever. Only here it seems to have an even more detrimental effect than usual on the running speed of the TV’s set up menus.

4K/HDR Performance

With most reviews these days, it’s in this section where we expect a TV to really come into its own. Unfortunately, though, with the 55XF8505 the exact opposite is true.

The issue, again, is its use of an IPS panel. But this time the IPS issue is elevated to a whole new level by the way Sony’s TV needs to ramp up its brightness to cope with the much more taxing demands of high dynamic range sources.

Even though the 55XF8505 can only deliver a little more than 500 nits of peak brightness (on a 10% white HDR window test), this still proves too much for the IPS panel to handle. Any scene that’s predominantly dark but includes a bright element or two looks painfully grey and washed out.

As well as being distracting in itself, this issue also greatly reduces HDR’s impact. After all, HDR isn’t just about brightness; it’s actually about the range of light on show, from the darkest parts to the brightest parts. Yet with the 55XF8505 there aren’t really any ‘dark parts’ worthy of the name.

That 500 nits of peak brightness also means that the brightest highlights don’t achieve the punch you get with more premium LCD and OLED TVs. Sony’s XF9005 step-up LCD models, for instance, achieve pretty much twice as much peak brightness as the 55XF8505.

The extra problems the 55XF8505 has controlling its light with HDR sources also exaggerate its problems with dark colours, and shadow detail in dark areas. Dark colours tend to look unnatural and wan, while shadow details can routinely disappear into the low contrast mist.

If there’s one advantage here it’s that the extra brightness HDR delivers helps to emphasise just how crisp and detailed the 55XF8505’s native 4K pictures look. The difference between 4K and HDR really is startlingly pronounced — and thanks to Sony’s excellent motion processing, the pristine clarity of native 4K images remains more or less intact even when you’re watching sport or an action movie.

One final solid aspect of the 55XF8505’s performance is its ability to produce images just 30ms after receiving image data at its inputs — provided, anyway, that you’ve got the Game picture preset selected. This makes it a functional if not spectacular gaming monitor.

4K/HDR TL;DR: While bright scenes can look pretty good, the 55XF8505 just can’t handle dark HDR scenes at all.
