Compared To Other TVs

The LG QNED90 is a very good overall 4k TV. The Mini LED backlight performs well, delivering the best contrast we’ve seen on an IPS TV. Unfortunately, there are still some issues with blooming, so a TV with a VA panel is still the way to go if you like to watch movies in a dark room.

Samsung QN90A QLED

43″ 50″ 55″ 65″ 75″ 85″

Although they use different panel technologies, each with strengths and weaknesses, the Samsung QN90A QLED is much better than the LG QNED90. The Samsung has much higher contrast, significantly better black uniformity, and a better local dimming feature, meaning that it looks better in a dark room. The Samsung also has higher peak brightness and much better reflection handling, so it’s better in a bright room, too.

LG C1 OLED

48″ 55″ 65″ 77″ 83″

The LG C1 OLED and the LG QNED90 use different panel technologies, each with strengths and weaknesses. The C1 uses an OLED panel, and as such, has a nearly infinite contrast ratio and no blooming in dark scenes, without the need for a local dimming feature. The QNED90, on the other hand, uses an LED backlight, so it doesn’t look as good in the dark, but it’s much brighter, so it might be a better choice for a bright room.

Samsung QN85A QLED

55″ 65″ 75″ 85″

The Samsung QN85A QLED is a bit better than the LG QNED90 for most uses. The Samsung has much better reflection handling and higher peak brightness, so it’s better for a bright room with lots of natural light. On the other hand, the LG has much better contrast with local dimming, so it’s a better choice for dark rooms.

Sony X90J

50″ 55″ 65″ 75″

The Sony X90J and the LG QNED90 use different panel technologies, each with strengths and weaknesses. The LG QNED90 and the Sony X95J use different panel technologies, each with strengths and weaknesses. The LG uses an IPS panel and is better suited for a bright room with a wide seating area. The Sony’s VA panel is better for a dark room, as it has much better contrast, better black uniformity, and a much better local dimming feature.

LG CX OLED

48″ 55″ 65″ 77″

The LG CX OLED and the LG QNED90 use different panel technologies, each with strengths and weaknesses. The CX’s OLED panel has a nearly infinite contrast ratio and no blooming in dark scenes, without the need for a local dimming feature, so it’s a much better choice if you’re in a completely dark room. The QNED90, on the other hand, uses an LED backlight, and it’s much brighter, so it might be a better choice for a bright room.

LG NANO90 2021

55″ 65″ 75″ 86″

The LG QNED90 is much better than the LG NANO90 2021. The QNED90 has a better local dimming feature thanks to the Mini LED backlight, and it has much better contrast with local dimming. The QNED90 is also brighter, but the NANO90 2021 has better reflection handling. Finally, the QNED90 we bought has much better accuracy out of the box, but this can vary between units.

LG QNED99 8k

65″ 75″ 86″

The LG QNED90 and the LG QNED99 8k are both very good TVs. The QNED99 is an 8k TV and the QNED90 is 4k, but they perform fairly similarly overall. The QNED99 has better black uniformity because there’s less blooming around bright objects, but the QNED90 gets brighter. The QNED90 has VRR support for gamers, which the QNED99 doesn’t have. They each have IPS-like panels, but the QNED90 has wider viewing angles, so it’s a better choice for wide seating areas.

The LG uses an IPS panel, and it has much better viewing angles and better local dimming. Overall, the TCL is better for watching movies in a dark room, but the LG is better for TV shows or sports in a bright room or if you have a wide seating area.

Compared To Other TVs

The LG QNED99 is an upgrade over the LG NANO99 8k 2020 thanks to the Mini LED backlighting, but it’s also disappointing compared to other TVs. It doesn’t get as bright as other Mini LED TVs like the Samsung QN90A QLED, and it doesn’t support VRR like the LG QNED90, so for its price, you’re not getting good value. Considering 8k content is still rare, it’s worth getting a 4k TV instead.

LG C1 OLED

48″ 55″ 65″ 77″ 83″

The LG QNED99 8k is a different type of TV compared to the LG C1 OLED. The QNED99 is an 8k TV that features Mini LED backlighting, allowing it to get much brighter than the OLED panel on the C1, but the C1 also has much higher contrast. Even though both have HDMI 2.1 inputs, the C1 has more gaming features like VRR support, and motion looks smoother due to the quicker response time. As the QNED99 has an LED panel, it doesn’t suffer from the risk of permanent burn-in like the C1.

Samsung QN90A QLED

43″ 50″ 55″ 65″ 75″ 85″

The Samsung QN90A QLED is much better overall than the LG QNED99 8k, but they’re different types of TVs. The Samsung is a 4k TV with a VA panel that has a much better native contrast. Its Mini LED local dimming feature is also much better, providing a superior dark room viewing experience. The Samsung gets brighter, so it makes highlights pop more in HDR, and it supports VRR. However, the LG can display 8k content and it has an IPS-like panel with wider viewing angles.

Samsung QN900A 8k QLED

65″ 75″ 85″

The Samsung QN900A 8k QLED is a bit better overall than the LG QNED99 8k. They use different panel types, so the Samsung has a higher contrast, but the LG has wider viewing angles instead. They each have Mini LED backlighting that’s supposed to provided better control over the dimming zones, but the LG has a more effective local dimming as it does a better job at handling fast-moving objects. Still, the Samsung gets brighter, and it has more gaming features like VRR support. On the other hand, the LG doesn’t show any of the upscaling issues that the Samsung does with 4k and 8k content, so it displays a perfect 8k image.

LG QNED90

Samsung QN800A 8k QLED

65″ 75″ 85″

The Samsung QN800A 8k QLED and the LG QNED99 8k are both very good 8k Mini LED TVs. The Samsung has a higher native contrast because it has a VA panel, but the IPS-like panel on the LG has wider viewing angles. Even though the LG has a worse contrast, it’s slightly better for watching movies because its local dimming feature is better and doesn’t cause as intense blooming around bright objects. It also displays native 8k content without any artifacts, unlike the Samsung. However, the Samsung is better for bright room viewing because it has better reflection handling and gets bright. It also supports VRR, which the LG doesn’t.

LG NANO99 8k 2020

65″ 75″

The LG QNED99 8k replaces the LG NANO99 8k 2020. It improves in a few areas, mainly because of the Mini LED backlighting. This allows the QNED99 to display deeper blacks and have a better local dimming feature with less blooming. It also gets brighter, so it’s better for watching HDR content. The QNED99 has a flicker-free backlight, while the NANO99 uses pulse width modulation. Other than an upgraded version of the webOS platform, there aren’t many other differences between them.
