Image Quality
As a camera that costs less than most smartphones, we can’t expect too much in the image quality department. The 60x zoom is certainly a feature no phone has, but otherwise don’t expect the B600 to deliver pictures that outshine those from your phone. Image quality is on par with the budget zoom category in good lighting conditions, such as shooting outdoors. Indoors and in low light, some smartphones can probably outshoot the B600 thanks to wider apertures and computational photography.
Hillary Grigonis/Digital Trends
The 60x zoom is not uncommon for a bridge camera these days, but hard to come by outside the category. For reference, that’s equivalent to a 24-1,440mm lens on a full-frame DSLR — something that simply doesn’t exist. Image quality is relatively consistent from the wide angle to the maximum zoom, though images tend to be a tad softer both at full zoom and in macro mode.
Thanks to the optical stabilization system, it is possible to handhold that long zoom in good lighting. The stabilization isn’t quite good enough to shoot at dusk. In any light, when shooting fully zoomed in, you likely won’t have a 100% hit rate without being very careful with how you grip the camera.
The 1/2.3-inch sensor is nothing to gloat about, but such a small sensor is necessary to be able to build such a large zoom lens. Detail is decent for the class, but not enough for heavy cropping (of course, that’s what that 60x zoom is for). Similarly, you’ll want to keep the ISO as low as possible. Noise is noticeable at ISO 800, but not terrible until pushing up to ISO 3200.

While the camera captures decent shots in good lighting conditions, we couldn’t get a sharp shot indoors. That’s a mix of the camera’s smaller sensor, limited aperture, and lack of manual controls pushing the shutter speed too low to freeze any motion. Even at the wide end of the lens, which allows for the brightest possible aperture of f/3.3, minor movement still caused blur.
The B600’s video mode carries over much of the same — picture quality is good, but nothing to brag about. Video is recorded at 1080p and 60 fps; not getting 4K isn’t a surprise on such a cheap camera. Electronic stabilization can also be turned on for video, but don’t expect to use that 60x zoom without a tripod. Impressively, though, you can use nearly half of it handheld without causing too much seasickness for viewers.

Sample Photos — Colour reproduction is pleasing, with nicely saturated colours both outdoors and indoors, and exposure is generally reliable. Dynamic range colour be better, and struggled at times to give an images without over-exposed highlights, when there was a wide dynamic range needed. Using the backlighting or HDR option helped here. The camera doesn’t offer raw shooting, so you will need to get it right in camera, and using the D-lighting option can help. The camera struggled in low-light conditions, and our night shot was particularly disappointing.

Lens Performance — The lens is soft toward the edges at wide-angle. Images are also softer when using the full optical zoom. Results in-between are a little better. Levels of detail are average, with images looking a little soft or «mushy» at times.
The lens is quite resistant to flare, and we struggled to spot any signs of vignetting. There is fairly well controlled purple fringing, although some is visible when there are high levels of contrast in an image, and there’s also some signs of chromatic aberration. Distortion is well controlled, with the camera automatically correcting for any barrel or pincushion distortion in-camera.
Overall, the lens gives fairly reasonable performance under good lighting. Macro performance is impressive, with the camera letting you focus on objects just 1cm away from the lens. Focus was also good, with a high success rate.

ISO Noise Performance — Noise is lowest at ISO125, and results are good, with good colour reproduction. As the ISO speed increases, so does noise, however results at good at ISO200. At ISO400 results are still good, although fine detail does drop off. At ISO800 noise increases again and fine detail is lost further. At ISO1600 noise becomes quite strong and this setting is likely to be the highest ISO speed you’ll want to use. ISO3200 and above is available, although results aren’t great, with ISO6400 showing the most noise, and a drop in colour saturation.

White Balance Performance — Auto White Balance (AWB) performs well under tungsten lighting, with a neutral image produced. If you’d like a warmer result, you can use the tungsten preset. AWB performs well under mixed lighting, and under fluorescent lighting. The fluorescent preset gives a magenta colour cast.
Nikon COOLPIX B600 Digital filters

Digital Filters — The creative effects mode takes a number of photos, one is left unedited, and four are produced with an effect applied to them. You can apply additional effects in playback.
Panoramic | 1/250 sec | f/3.5 | 5.0 mm | ISO 140
The camera has an automatic panoramic mode, where you simply pan the camera from one side to the other. The stitching is good, but the image resolution is low, with a 4800×920 pixel image. Dynamic range has struggled.
Video — The B600 records FullHD video at 30/25fps, and you can use the optical zoom while recording. Audio is recorded using the stereo microphones on top of the camera. The built-in vibration reduction (optical image stabilisation) helps keep video stable, and the camera was able to focus quickly even when using the full optical zoom of the lens.

Sacrifices for Size
Bridge cameras fill a real need in the photographic market. Big zoom ranges can tackle a wide variety of subjects, from landscapes to architecture to macro to wildlife. They don’t (typically) do a great job in low light, but you can always reach into your pocket and grab your smartphone if you want a flash-free low-light snapshot.
The Nikon Coolpix B600 certainly delivers on the promise of zoom—its 60x lens is one of the longest we’ve seen in a bridge camera this small. But it sacrifices some useful features—notably a tilting display and eye-level EVF—which would make the zoom power a little more easy to use, from an ergonomic perspective.
The lack of manual shooting exposure controls makes the B600 a complete non-starter for serious photographers. If you know your way around an SLR, you’ll be frustrated. But it also limits the ability to use the B600 as a learning tool.
In this price range, we like the Panasonic FZ80 more. It has an EVF, covers a wider angle of view, and supports 4K video. It costs a little more ($400), but does go on sale from time to time. Our Editors’ Choice model, the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS, is in a different class at $550, but worth thinking about if you can spare the extra cash.
- Big zoom power.
- Sharp rear display.
- Snappy autofocus.
- SnapBridge wireless.
- Relatively compact.

The Bottom Line
The Nikon Coolpix B600 promises a ton of zoom for not a lot of money, but at the cost of useful features that are worth spending a bit more for.

Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
461k dots
921k dots
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Power and Connectivity
The B600 supports in-camera charging via its micro USB port. Nikon includes an AC adapter and cable to plug the camera into a wall, but no method of charging the battery outside the body. If it’s something you want to do, an external charger is another $37.95 and a spare EN-EL12 battery costs the same. The B600 is rated for 280 shots per CIPA testing standards, so it should get you through most days on a charge, depending on how heavily you use the wireless transfer feature. In-camera charging offers the option of topping off the battery on the go.
Along with micro HDMI, the micro USB port is the only connector on the body; both are on the right side. The memory card and battery load in the bottom. The card format is SD, standard in point-and-shoots, and the B600 also works with newer SDHC and SDXC cards, although it doesn’t take advantage of UHS-II speeds. Don’t fret, though, as the camera doesn’t shoot files big enough to require the faster speeds offered by newer formats.
Nikon calls its wireless system SnapBridge, and it’s included in the B600. The camera sports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The SnapBridge app, a free download for Android or iOS, is required for operation. It’s quick and easy to set up, though you should have some patience as it does take more than a handful of seconds for the two devices to start talking to each other for initial setup. If your app is stuck in the «Select An Accessory» screen with no options, give it a minute and the B600 should appear.
The SnapBridge app can download downsized (2MP) JPGs via Bluetooth in the background if you turn Auto Download on. It’s useful if you want to be able to Instagram or Facebook all of your vacation shots, while you’re still on vacation. You can transfer full size, 16MP JPGs wirelessly, but you’ll need to connect via Wi-Fi and manually select the images you want to copy to your phone.

Autofocus Speed and Performance
The B600 is not a camera to reach for when photographing action. Its autofocus system is fine for things standing still, or not moving around too fast, but this is not the camera to bring to a pro sporting event or to try and capture action shots of active wildlife.
That said, it’s not a dog either. It starts and shoots in about a second, locks focus at the wide angle in about 0.05-second, and at its telephoto extreme in about 0.15-second. But the focus system comes into play—there’s no way to manually select a focus area in many modes, so you’re really left to the camera deciding what to focus on. In many situations it does a decent job, but there are practical reasons to opt for a more refined focus point.
Scene modes come into play here. If you switch to the Sports position on the dial the camera swaps to a small, central area of focus. You’ll need to take care to place it over your target. The smaller focus area does slow the camera down a little bit—at 24mm it locks focus in about 0.1-second in Sports mode and in 0.2-second at 1,440mm. You’re locked into Burst shooting in Sports, but if you prefer the smaller focus area and Single release, you can dive into the menu and select the Bird Watching scene from the list. Sports, directly accessible via the Mode Dial, is easier to get in and out of.
Bursts are captured at a speedy 9.4fps, but you’re limited to just seven shots at a time, and the camera is unresponsive for about 9 seconds after capture as images are committed to memory.

Nikon Coolpix B600 Handling
Handling — The Nikon Coolpix B600 is relatively compact, with a thin body, and a large comfortable handgrip, with lots of rubber grip to hold on to. There’s a rubber area on the back for you thumb, and the button layout means you can reach everything with your right hand. There’s also a textured grip around the bottom of the lens barrel, to help when you’re holding the camera with two hands. We’d recommend this, particularly when using a lot of optical zoom.
With a plastic body, you might expect the camera to feel flimsy, but instead the camera feels very well put together, with a sturdy feeling. The speckled effect on the plastic helps give the impression of a more premium model.
The top of the camera features the mode dial, on/off button, shutter releaser button, with zoom rocker around this. On top, behind the pop-up flash, are stereo microphones, and the pop-up flash is opened manually, and closed in the same way.
The buttons on the back give you quick access to flash, self-timer, exposure compensation, and macro focus. To change other settings you need to go in to the menus, and these are neatly laid out. There aren’t too many options, and there is built-in help to explain each setting, making it easier to use. The video record button is guarded to avoid you accidentally pressing it. There’s no quick access to other settings, unfortunately.
The screen is clear and gives a good view of the scene, although unfortunately the screen doesn’t tilt, which means viewing the screen in bright sunlight can be difficult at times, and a tilting screen would definitely help with more creative angles.
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth Features — The Nikon “SnapBridge” app (available for Android and iOS) will let you transfer images over Bluetooth, as either 2mp images, or full-size images. If you transfer full-size images then this is noticeably slower than transferring 2mp images.
Battery life — Battery life is rated at 280 shots according to Nikon / CIPA test results, which is slightly below average for this class of camera. We’d recommend a spare battery if you plan on shooting more. Charging is via the MicroUSB connection, meaning you should be able to easily charge the camera when out and about.
Speed — Focus speeds were reasonable in good light, although slower in lower light. The camera is reasonable in how quickly it responds once you’ve taken a photo, it’s not lightning fast, but it’s also not frustratingly slow, so should be okay for most things. It’s not really fast enough to rapidly respond to things happening quickly, so if you spot something, you might miss the shot, as you wait for the camera to switch on and focus on a subject.
6.17 x 4.55mm
6.17 x 4.55mm
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
Canon PowerShot SX540 HS
Nikon Coolpix B600
